The classic bunion is a bump on the side of the great toe joint that causes it to push inward toward your other toes. As the bunion becomes more and more pronounced, it can change the shape of your foot and the position of your big toe tends to become increasingly painful.

Bunions develop from abnormal foot structure and mechanics, which place an undue load on the first metatarsal. This leads to stretching of supporting soft tissue structures, gradually deviating the 1st metatarsal and drifting of the great toe toward the second toe.

Possible causes include:

  • Family history and genetics
  • Arthritis
  • Neuromuscular conditions
  • Connective tissue disorders

Symptoms related to bunions may include:

  • Pain and swelling over the big toe that increases while wearing shoes
  • Swelling with red, sore and calloused skin at the base of the big toe
  • Sore skin over the toe
  • Difficulty in walking and wearing shoes

Advanced Surgical Treatment Options

Our doctors perform thorough examinations and spend time listening to our patients, understanding their concerns and providing the best treatment alternatives to meet their needs.

Initially, conservative treatment measures can be implemented to reduce or eliminate your foot pain. Such measures can include:

  • Medications for relieving pain and inflammation
  • Wearing shoes with a wide and high toe box,
  • Padding of bunions
  • Ice applications several times a day

The choice of surgical procedures is based on a physical and radiographic examination of the foot. Because there is actual bone displacement and joint adaptation, most successful bunionectomies require realigning the 1st metatarsal back to its place.
